I’ve become emotionally attached to these carrot sprouts since squirrels murdered the others, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I need to thin them. They’re in a 10 gallon bag, how many have to go?

I grew rainbow carrots in a fiber pot this summer and didn’t thin them out. I harvested them gradually and as I did, the smaller ones had more room to grow. I was pulling up carrots for weeks. The fiber pot made it easier for them to expand.

I like to give mine about 3-4″ between them otherwise you see the top and think you’re getting a big carrot but then it’s tiny

They aren’t that close together. You should be fine keeping those. Keep in mind that carrots grown in grow bags that aren’t taller than 12-18 inches in depth tend to turn into Franken-carrots. Carrots send down a tiny single root at the start all the way to the bottom. If it doesn’t go down far enough…they have a habit of splitting, twisting, and turning into Franken-carrots. Minimum recommendations for carrots is 18 inches soil depth. Franken-carrots are still tasty. Just a teeny tiny tad bit harder to peel!! 😂🤣😂

Thin to roughly 1 to 2 inches apart depending on variety and desired root size.

I presprouted carrot seeds then placed them the proper distance from one another, in a cloth pot. The seedlings look well spaced, but damn what a hassle. Since it is early winter/late fall in coastal CA, I have a month or so until I find out how my method works

I planted 1000 last year and didn’t thin at all. Just picked the big ones when they got big. This year I’m going in with 15,000. We will see how it goes! I don’t thin anything lol. Throw the seeds down and let it rip baby!!

I don’t thin carrots until they are edible as tiny carrots of about 3″ long and I sow carrots pretty thick. In this pic, these are thinned baby carrots. I continue to thin as carrots grow and get more crowded, so earlier carrots are tiny and they get larger as the season goes on. Everything on that baking sheet is pretty small, baby zukes, and small beets all from my garden.

You’ll want to thin them so there’s at least 2 inches between each sprout. I know it’s tough, but they need the space to grow proper carrots! You could plant the extras elsewhere if you have the room.

None. They are very well spaced already, and probably could have quite a few more in there.

    At this stage I wouldn’t.

You really only need to thin as the shoulders show. Then you thin and eat the smaller ones allowing others to continue to grow.
