Magpies can be a nuisance in gardens, as they are known to eat the eggs of other birds, which can deter smaller species like robins from visiting bird feedersThe Eurasian Magpie or Common Magpie (Pica pica) on the ground in springSince magpies are bigger and extremely territorial, they can easily frighten songbirds like robins(Image: Henri Lehtola via Getty Images)

Magpies can prove quite controversial as they possess remarkable intelligence, yet they’re notorious for raiding eggs from other nests, which often deters other birds from frequenting gardens. Birds dedicate more time to scavenging during autumn as natural food supplies, including berries and insects, become scarce, meaning magpies are commonly seen at bird feeders during this season.

Since magpies are bigger and extremely territorial, they can easily frighten songbirds like robins and cause them to avoid a garden completely.

However, David, an expert from Bird Proofing HQ, has shared a straightforward technique to repel magpies whilst still attracting robins — needing nothing more than some old CDs or DVDs, reports the Express.

David said: “One effective way to deter magpies is by using reflective objects. These birds are sensitive to light reflections, which can startle and prevent them from entering your garden.

“Hanging old CDs or using bird scare tapes in strategic areas can create reflections that frighten magpies away. Bird scare tape, designed specifically for this purpose, can be affixed in areas where magpies frequent.”

CDs, or any shimmering material, reflect sunlight, and the sudden flashes of light can mimic the presence of predators, which will persuade magpies that an area is dangerous. Magpies can feel vulnerable or simply uncomfortable due to their heightened sensitivity to reflective light, unlike other birds such as songbirds.

However, robins, who usually feed on the ground, are less likely to be intrigued by shiny objects in the air.

Robins are also known for their curiosity and adaptability, making them less skittish than magpies when it comes to new elements in their surroundings.

How you can deter magpies from your garden and attract robins instead

Simply attach some string to old CDs and hang them from trees, fences or other tall structures in your garden.

While magpies favour open spaces, robins are more inclined towards quieter areas. Make sure the CDs are evenly distributed throughout your garden, but avoid placing them in corners or secluded spots.

Another effective method to keep magpies at bay is to stop discarding kitchen scraps in your garden. Instead, opt for foods that robins adore like mealworms, suet pellets and sunflower seeds.

Being omnivores, magpies are attracted to gardens with meat or vegetables, but they’re unlikely to find mealworms or fatty seeds appealing.

Using caged seeders that allow robins to feed but are too small for magpies can also help deter these larger birds from your garden during the autumn season.
