Aston and Cote Primary School started a new garden in the spring of 2025 as part of their drive to improve their sustainability and nurture programme.

Year 4 teacher Roland Foster said: “The idea being not only to grow some of our food for the school but also to get children involved with the natural cycles and foster an appreciation of where food comes from.”

Children at the school have produced a range of crops, from potatoes, tomatoes, strawberries and carrots for school dinners, to spinach and chives for the local shop.

Mr Foster said: “Aston’s children became gardeners, farmers, composters and carers of not just food plants, but pollinators and perennials.

The squashes and an enormous pumpkin made a large amount of soup in DT lessons, adding another layer of practicality to their green activities.

They have also created a sensory experience, by planting herbs and climbers.

Currently, the pupils are getting the garden ready for winter, making leaf mulch, protecting the soil and insulating the worm farm.

Recycled rainwater collectors are being introduced to reduce reliance on mains water.

They hope to be self-sufficient in this area.

Fundraising activities are also being planned to help build a large greenhouse/outdoor learning space, which will be accessible to all pupils.
