Garden centres become much more than garden centres at this time of year as they’re transformed for the festive season.
One place that does pull in the punters is Newbank Garden Centre, which is packed with Christmas displays and the Newton-le-Willows branch, on the edge of Greater Manchester, is just one of its five sites that have been transformed into a winter wonderland.
A reindeer inside a hot air balloon is greeting customers to the store, which is just a few minutes from the main East Lancs Road, and is packed to the rafters with decorations of every kind.
Everything is colour coordinated in store and there are all kinds of colour schemes and themes this year from woodland mushrooms, leaves and acorns to traditional jewel baubles in glittering gold, greens and deep reds.

Newbank is widely known for its reasonable prices compared with other garden centres and there are plenty of bargains to be had including 14cm baubles costing £2.99 each, or three for £8.
There are festive table decorations and tea light holders, again from around £2.99, all kinds of animal baubles including polar bears and penguins, and some miniature hot air balloons to hang up too.
For those needing a tree, or wanting to splash out on an upgrade, there are trees of all shapes and sizes too, as well as a wide range of lighting including glowing rattan deer and a new range of Smart Garden Blinkin characters like Santa and a snowy owl, which, as the name suggests, ‘blink and wink’, promising ‘a delightful and playful effect day and night’.

As well as the ‘stunning displays’ it’s the prices and staff that impress customers at Newbank, which has other branches in Radcliffe, Bury; Dobcross and Royton in Oldham, as well as Halifax.
“Love Newbank Garden Centre,” commented one customer on its Facebook page. “We go to the Newton-le-Willows store…staff there are fabulous..so friendly and helpful, it’s always a wonderful visit.”
“Just been. Love this place, it’s far better than Bents and Barton Grange,” said another. “The prices are a lot cheaper too. Christmas displays are beautiful. Highly recommended.”
A third customer added: “We go to the one in Dobcross, lovely garden centre, I always buy something when their staff are lovely and the Christmas displays are amazing.”

The Santa’s Grotto at Newbank is another hit with families and they offer the experience at the Radcliffe and Newton-le-Willows branches.
Little ones are greeted by one of Santa’s elves, who welcomes families into Santa’s grotto to take a seat and learn a song.
When Santa hears all the singing, he arrives to tell the children a magical story. Each child receives a special present that the elves have wrapped as they leave the grotto.
Tickets, which can be booked on the website, cost £14.99 per child and includes one free adult. Additional adults cost £4.99 with a maximum of two per booking.
