Deer, Animal of some kind . Ither eating or rubbing his body against it.

Should have put a barrier around it

Sticking the culprit in the freezer sounds like pretty good revenge.

With the abundant reddit pictures of tree rubs aren’t people getting the message yet?

How do you feel about learning grafting?

If you are in a freeze area, do the fishhook shaped ones like vineyards use. You can find a ton of help on wine-growing sites.

Sorry, the exact same thing happened to me last year with a new tree. If you’re in a high deer population area (or if they are even somewhat common), you’re gonna have to get a fence or some sort of trunk protection. Unfortunately, this tree is done for. 🙁 Sorry.

It’s that time of year. Protect your skinny new trees or lose them. Fencing works.

Buck rubs. You had a visitor

I concur,….buck rub. That’s the price you pay when you build in their habitat.

How old does a tree have to get to withstand this?

What you think is damage, was actually a rubbing post to a deer.

A deer did this. Trees this young need to have protection from deer during this time of the year, otherwise this happens.

This tree has a low chance of recovery.
