There are numerous tasks to tackle in the garden this autumn to craft a stunning seasonal showcase, while also preparing for the brighter months ahead. The chilly weather, longer nights, and reduced daylight hours mean many of the plants and blooms which thrived in your garden throughout the summer will be fading away.

The magnificent autumn hues can transform your garden into a breathtaking exhibition of red, orange, and gold – though there are several things you must do to maximise its potential.

Gardening inspiration and guidance social media account flourishliving has shared six essential jobs to complete this season to capitalise on the autumn weather and conditions.

A video uploaded on TikTok offers some crucial advice for gardeners this season, reports the Express.

The video description stated: “Here are 6 autumn gardening jobs you need to crack on with RIGHT NOW before it’s too late. From cutting back perennials to planting for winter colour, these are the essential tasks that’ll set your garden up for success.

“Don’t let your garden look sad this winter. Follow Flourish for seasonal garden tips, outdoor entertaining ideas, and plant care hacks that actually work.”

The initial recommendation is to prune roses back. The video commentary explained: “At number one I will be giving all my roses a cut back as well as enjoying the last of the blooms for this season.”

The second suggestion involves tidying up your garden, while the third focuses on selecting and preparing bulbs for next year’s planting. The narrator explained: “October is my tidying season, so I do a lot of cutting back and prepping the garden for next year. This includes picking and prepping the bulbs that I want.”

Regarding the fourth recommendation, the narrator said: “Crispy leaf season is well and truly here, so make sure you’re picking up those leaves and that they’re not going onto your new plants, in the pond, or on your lawn.”

For the fifth point, they emphasised that October represents the final chance to plant new bulbs before spring arrives. “October is the last month to get those plants in the ground,” they explained.

“I chose these winter hardy cyclamen that are beautiful and flower throughout the cold. Thank goodness that little bit of rain has made it a lot easier to dig into the ground.”

The concluding advice centres on prioritising mental wellbeing. The narrator advised: “Dark nights and dark mornings are slowly closing in, so make sure you’re getting outside for at least 10 minutes a day, so go and get that Vitamin D because your plants and your mind will thank you for it.”

One viewer responded: “I’m going to plant my allium bulbs this weekend”, prompting Flourish to reply: “That sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday.”

Another added: “So important to get outside when you can for a leaf crunch (and clear up!)”
