It's heading towards my foundation. I'm calling a local arborist, but don't really know the right questions to ask. Any advice? TY.

Advice? No. There was one close to my dorm in college (yes I was a Botany major). There were surface roots everywhere. Those roots are water hogs. Those roots are hell on the old clay tile sewer lines.

If you have a poured concrete foundation or basement you are probably ok as long as there are not any cracks or holes in the concrete. Roots don’t grow through concrete. Typically a concrete wall is strong enough to withstand the pressure of roots growing adjacent to it. Roots can grow through concrete walls if the wall is already compromised.

If you have a concrete block foundation the roots can exert pressure on the outside of the wall and bow it in and crack it. No bueno.

No action needed, unless your foundation is crumbling it’s not going to affect it. It’s got more than enough space. Tree roots only affect foundations if the roots have absolutely nowhere else to go, say if the trunk is physically touching the house, or if the foundation dirt or is in such bad shape the root can simply grow through it without any resistance. Neither appears to be the case here so no worries.

The idea of a tree at this distance just cracking through a perfectly sound foundation is a myth. Plus if you’re seeing a root this large, if it were to affect it you would have seen the effects a decade or more ago
