First time ever digging up a dahlia tuber so not sure if this is normal. They are all fused together, no way to divide them. I don't see signs of gall but I’m clearly not an expert. What should I do?

This is an automatic reminder regarding r/dahlias Rule 3:

When reasonable*, posters should make a good-faith effort to identify which variety/varieties are shown in their photo(s). If you don’t know for certain, please say so. Someone will usually know!

*Common-sense exceptions to this rule will be honored, such as if the photo does not contain a blossom, or if your photo contains large volumes (such as in wide field shots).

If you’ve already done this, thank you! No further action required.

If not, please add a reply to this comment and confirm if you know the name of your dahlia variety/varieties shown in the photo(s). Alternately, if you’re uncertain of the variety name(s), it’s ok to say that, too.

Different varieties produce different configurations of tubers. This is normal. It definitely makes dividing really hard.

Wash the dirt out, that will help, but yeah, some of them do that! PITA

I have a few that look like that. I decided that it would be a “spring me” problem

They’re not fused, they’re just really tightly packed. I’d snip where that big bare spot of stem is. Once you start cutting into it you’ll see how they are, but often with these I just half or quarter them and call it good. Even doing that, tubers will start falling off since you’re cutting sort of randomly, and make it easier to see stems and eyes.

Let it dry a day or 2 and then try again. The tubers will shrink ever so slightly.

Some varieties make tubers that are lovely and spaced out with distinct visible eyes and easy to divide tubers and some varieties are THIS NONSENSE. I’m sorry, what a PITA. Totes agree with other posters, wash off dirt, let dry for a few hours, maybe wait until spring. Also you could plant as one clump, or just cut down the middle into two clumps if you can’t work out dividing individual tubers. Best of luck 😬
