The Gardener’s World presenter says work can start on tulips any time before Christmas; however, if you’re hoping for them to flower early, it’s best to get a head start.

Sharing his tips and tricks of the trade, the 70-year-old said an essential component to a good, healthy display is to ensure they have adequate drainage, and should be treated as annuals rather than perennials, being dug up after flowering.

Additions of grit and sand to the heavy soil will result in a “happier” plant.

However, the key to their success will rely on the depth in which they are planted, and if they are permanent, they must be placed deep enough to ensure stronger and straighter stems are formed.

However, if growing them in a container, gardeners can form a “tulip lasagne”, planting the bulbs in layers, with the varieties of Orange Emperor, Negrita, and Queen of the Night.
