EXCLUSIVE: Story Kitchen, the production company known for its work in adapting video games for film and television, is teaming with the creators of Grow a Garden to develop a feature adaptation of the Roblox phenomenon.

With more than 33 billion plays and one of the most passionate fanbases on the Roblox platform, Grow a Garden is a game where players cultivate thriving gardens, trade crops, decorate worlds, and collaborate in seasonal events. Upon its launch this past March, the title broke out as one of the most explosive phenomena in gaming, registering a peak concurrent player count of 22.3 million in August — thus surpassing the all-time high for one of the most popular titles in gaming, Fortnite, which peaked at 15.3 million concurrent players. At one point earlier this summer, Grow a Garden accounted for more than two-thirds of the ~30 million players logged into Roblox.

“Grow a Garden is exactly the kind of imaginative, heartfelt world we love to adapt,” said Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri M. Johnson and Michael Lawrence Goldberg, “an uplifting story-world rooted in play, creativity, and community.”

Plot details for the feature take are under wraps. But we’re told that it’ll invite audiences of all ages into a whimsical, emotional, and unexpectedly epic story about growth, friendship, and the magic that happens when you nurture something from the ground up. The project is currently in early development, with Story Kitchen collaborating closely with the creative team behind the game to craft a narrative embodying the game’s uplifting, community-driven DNA.

Producers on the film include Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson for Story Kitchen, alongside Jeremy Bolt for JB Pictures. John Gaudiosi and John Benyamine of Moonrock will serve as co-producers, together with Story Kitchen’s Elena Sandoval. The project is being produced in association with Think Influence, which reps the creators of Grow a Garden. Further attachments will be announced in the coming months.

Since its founding in 2022, Story Kitchen has spearheaded adaptations of Tomb Raider (Amazon MGM & Netflix), Life Is Strange (Amazon MGM), Teddy Ruxpin (Amazon MGM) and Just Cause (Universal), as well as ’90s SEGA classics such as Streets of Rage (Lionsgate), Shinobi (Universal) and Toejam & Earl (Amazon MGM). Other upcoming projects, based on indie games, include Split Fiction (Amazon MGM), It Takes Two (Amazon MGM), Sifu (Netflix), and Ruiner (Universal). The company is represented by WME and Pryor Cashman.
