Just wondering why it is some specimens get named and become staples and other amazing specimens don’t. Or maybe they do eventually? I just see so many incredible specimens that seem as cool or much cooler than a lot of popular named clones. What are the characteristics that make things stick? I imagine there are several, and some may not be obvious to a newbie like me
Picture is from pach.man.cactus insta, colossus x LJ to illustrate what I mean and so people actually click on this post. If you haven’t already, check out his stuff, its crazy

Love the cross! Sometimes when two titans collide, people just want to know them as titan1 x titan2, as they are reaching out for characteristics they may already know. Other times, some people see named crosses and think “why did you name it that, I miss the days when there were only a few names.” I’d say sometimes a name just sticks, for whatever reasons, or it doesn’t. If you want to name a cross or a noid, I say go for it! Call it Thunderdome, Gigalith, or even just a name like Julio or Bert.
That’s beautiful 🌵🌵🌵🥰

Cactus get nicknames as short hand because they are commonly traded or bought over many years. This is because of striking appearance or rare characteristics. Many named cactus are just narcissistic greedy cactus salesmen trying to pretend they have something new and great to sell. This clogs up the space with nonsense and old clones get 5+ cultivar names. Newer clones don’t get named because there is really no way to know what a cactus looks like for many years. Pups and young growth of pretty standard looking cactus can look wild for a while then grow out of it. The really amazing cactus like Bruce or penis or csd get crazier as they get older and the wildest ones are the oldest ones.
