Hello all,

Last week, I pricked my finger. I didn’t think anything of it as ive been pricked before but it has always resolved itself. This time is very different than other things.

My finger blew up rather quickly. For a week it has been this way without resolution. Sensation in the finger also has a noticeable difference. There is also pain upon touch. I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar reaction to this?

I will be going to urgent care in the morning.

Probably just infected. Spines can be pretty dirty. My foot swelled up too big for my shoe after kicking a golden barrel one time. Get some antibiotics and you’ll be alright

In my short, yet productive career of being impaled by cactus spines, I can’t say that’s ever happened to me. The cactus alone shouldn’t cause a reaction like this, so I’d guess either the wound got infected and/or the tip of the spine broke off and is still inside you.

Probably got infected, good thing you will be getting medical attention.

I have to ask, why do people take a week to go to get checked when something like this happens? Is this an American thing, because healthcare cost so much or because you can’t get time off? I just see posts like this and I get really confused, I’d be at the doc the same day it swelled up.

I hate to say it, but that kinda looks like potential sporotrichosis 😬 I REALLY hope that I’m mistaken, but people can definitely get it from cacti and other stabby vegetation rather than just roses. It’s curable, but much more difficult to treat and cure if it spreads beyond skin. If it goes for too long and spreads(like to the bones and lungs) it can be life threatening.

OP, I don’t want to alarm you, but an infection like this can take a turn for the worse
VERY quickly. Go to urgent care immediately.

could be Sporotrichosis. It’s a fungal infection from plant spines. Aka rose gardeners disease

That looks like a paronychia (a pus pocket at the base of your fingernail). If there is indeed pus there, it needs a simple puncture incision to let it drain +/- antibiotics (Keflex, doxy, or Bactrim), as well as some hot compresses/hot water soaks.

Had one in my palm. Didn’t get that big. It was sensitive at first then seemed like a callus. It was from my cactus also. By the time I went to the doctor, it was already healing. It was the way my body was getting rid of the thorn

I would go to the doctor. It might resolve on its own, or it could turn necrotic.

Have you tried phoning home, ET?

paronychia. I can see pus there. Needs opening. Not necessarily antibiotics if the pus flow out well, but see a Dr.

It’s not uncommon for me to have red and soreness. Most cactus spines are loaded with bacteria.
