TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – “A Salute to Our Armed Forces” reception was held on Monday to honor Kansas-area veterans.
The event was held at the Kay McFarland Japanese Garden and was dedicated to veterans and their spouses.
Kansas military service members from all branches were honored for their courage and sacrifice.
Bill Turner, Kansas Veterans Services director, says every veteran of the armed forces has one thing in common.
“I think serving in the military has offered a platform to live a purposeful life, to be able to give back to our nation, to serve something greater than ourselves,” Turner said. “A lot of these things are cliche-ish, but there’s a true fulfillment that comes from serving our nation, to being able to defend our Constitution that we abide by.“
The Kay McFarland Trust says the Kansas Supreme Court Justice, Kay McFarland, had strong ties to service, such as her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and her great-grandfather’s time in the Civil War.
The event featured speakers from the Kansas Adjutant General’s Department who gave reflections on service and legacy.
