For the first time in many years, the Genesee Region USBC is fielding a scratch league as 14 bowlers – seven two-person teams — are battling it out every week on Tuesday nights at Rose Garden Bowl in Bergen.
Thus far, the scoring pace has been pretty high with all but six bowlers averaging 200 or better, led by Jim Lambert of Batavia with a lofty 236 average after seven weeks.
Brian Green, one of three left-handers in the league, raised his average to 225 this past week by rolling 229-300-279—808 on lanes 7-8.
Green, who is running his Striking Effects Pro Shop from his Pavilion home these days, recorded 21 straight strikes before leaving a 7-pin in the 10th frame of the third game.
It is the second 800 series in the association this season. Brian Cline of Middleport, also a lefty, posted 803 on Sept. 11 at Medina Lanes. Green’s big series bumped a 796 by Jeremy Vallance into the second spot on the leaderboard and the 300 did likewise to the 299 by Dave Montemarano Jr.
Lambert and Montemarano have built a 20-point lead over Kyle Johnson and Vallance; the 7 p.m. league – which is sponsored by Rose Garden Bowl — bowls for 15 points per night based on head-to-head and team totals.
In other action at Rose Garden Bowl, lefty Rob Husted finished with a 300 game in the Thursday Owls League on Oct. 23, finding the line after a pair of 178 games, and Chris Dunn sandwiched a 300 game between 189 and 170 on Oct. 29 in the Wednesday 7 C’s Homies Handicap League.
At Mount Morris Lanes, Shawn Yates (on Oct. 5) and Tony Farruggia (on Oct. 11) recorded perfect games, with Farruggia posting a 798 series.
And at Mancuso Bowling Center in Batavia, Chris Bailey notched a 290 game in the Tuesday Triples League on Oct. 28.
