Now we’re in the business end of autumn, gardens across the UK are covered with leaves.

And while it may look like a pretty picture postcard scene, leaves left uncollected can cause major headaches for homeowners.

If not regularly raked away from drains, fallen leaves can cause blockages and potentially spark a flood both inside and outside the home.

And it could become a costly nightmare for homeowners to sort out.

Experts advise people to keep on top of leaves, with those living near woodland and in more remote areas naturally more at risk of problems.

Experts at Drain Medics say: “As the autumn months roll in, so do the falling leaves, bringing with them the risk of blocked drains and potential flooding.

“Outdoor drains are particularly vulnerable during this time of year, as leaves and other debris accumulate, restricting water flow.

“If not addressed promptly, these blockages can lead to significant damage—including flooding inside your home—causing unnecessary stress and expense.

“Fortunately, with a few preventative measures and the right professional assistance, you can keep your drains clear and functioning properly.”

They went on: “During wet and windy weather, they are easily swept into gutters, drain covers, and downpipes.

“Once inside the drainage system, leaves mix with other debris such as dirt and silt, leading to slow drainage, blockages, and, in severe cases, flooding.

“A blocked drain is more than just an inconvenience; it can cause structural damage to your property, create foul odours, and even result in water backing up into your home.

“Prevention is key to avoiding costly repairs and maintaining a fully functional drainage system.

“One of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent blocked drains is by regularly sweeping up leaves before they have a chance to accumulate.

“Pay special attention to areas near your drain covers, gutters, and pathways.

“After particularly windy days, make it a habit to clear any leaves that may have been blown towards your drainage system.”
