We love strolling through pretty parks and gardens around Melbourne, and if you’re a fan of flowers, there’s one in the western suburbs that’s just waiting for you to visit. Wander over to the Victoria State Rose Garden, a 5-hectare space that’s filled with 5,000 colourful roses. Located near Werribee Open Range Zoo and adjacent to Werribee Mansion, this space is open every day and is particularly magnificent from November to April.

When viewed from above, this gorgeous garden is shaped like a five-petalled Tudor Rose, as well as a leaf and rosebud. Pathways around the garden act as the stem, and at the centre of the space, you’ll find a charming gazebo. Each ‘flower petal’ is home to 25 beds of modern roses, and 11 tripods of pillar roses. At the outer edge of each ‘petal’, you’ll find rambling and climbing roses, creating cheerful festoons. Meander along the paths and gaze at the abundance of radiant roses, and breathe in their sweet fragrance.

We’re not the only ones to appreciate this beautiful part of town. In 2003, the Victoria State Rose Garden was awarded the International Garden of Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies. It was the first rose garden outside of Europe to receive this award. At the time, it was also the only one cared for by volunteers.
Visiting the park is completely free! You’re welcome to make a donation, which will go towards the upkeep of the garden. This garden is carefully maintained by a passionate group of volunteers, with assistance by staff from Parks Victoria. If you’ve got a green thumb, the garden is always looking for new volunteers.
You’re welcome to pack a picnic to enjoy on the grounds, just remember to take your rubbish with you. Unfortunately, dogs aren’t welcome to come along. Start planning your visit here.
