In March 2022, Jonti Richardson-Jones purchased two New Hampshire grey garden furniture sets from The Range, the retailer in question, for £2,409. Within weeks, the furniture began to sag and deteriorate. After raising the issue in June 2023, the retailer asked him to fund an independent inspection costing £200. The resulting report identified a manufacturing fault requiring specialist repair.

Unhappy with partial refund offers, Richardson-Jones represented himself in Wigan County Court, which ruled in his favour. The Range was ordered to provide a full refund and cover additional costs totalling £2,755.93.

Following the verdict, the customer shared his experience on TikTok, urging others not to “give up” when pursuing valid complaints.

A spokesperson for The Range said the company had “complied fully with the judgment” but noted it did not agree with all aspects of the claim. The retailer maintained that it follows the Consumer Rights Act and that “new evidence” accepted by the court influenced the outcome. The company added that it continues to review its products and processes to ensure “quality and value” for customers.
