Hi all,

Rescued this lil guy from the trash. He’s been in gritty soil for about 6 weeks. I removed some scale when I found him and isolated in a sunny window. Haven’t watered at all. I have other cacti and know the glazed pot isn’t ideal but it’s got a drainage hole and lots of grit.

Now the weather is turning cold and dark and I need to get him under a grow light with my other plants. Wondering if the white dusty material is mold. Wondering if the large tan area is an active fungal infection. I just gave him an alchohol bath with qtips and am just sad. Don’t know if I should risk putting him near my other plants but I have no other options besides trash.

How is the base and how are the roots? Nature… Finds a way.

Awww, I hope he gets better. So glad you saved him. I hate to see any plant thrown away

It doesn’t look like an active infection to me. You said it was firm to the touch, but does any kind of powder come off on your hands when you touch that part? I saw you mentioned cleaning with alcohol; you could also give it a hydrogen peroxide rinse and/or lightly dust with sulfur powder if you want to be even more cautious.

If the roots are solid, you might be okay! Keep an eye on it, though. Better safe than sorry with your other plants!
