My daughter had an "enchanted forest" themed wedding last year and amongst all the decorations were lots of spanish moss. It was beautiful and quickly jumped to the top of my plant wish list. A couple weeks ago I finally order some from an Etsy seller… in fear 1 order wouldn't be enough, I ordered 3! Yeah, 1 would've been more than enough…😳

It arrived plenty moist so I waited a week before watering. Last weekend was my first time watering…it took the whole weekend! I soaked it in bowls of dechlorinated water with a bit of hydroponic fertilizer for about an hour (same as I do my other air plants). This took multiple hours because I only have 3 bowls big enough to hold a clump. Then I laid it out to dry on paper towels… again, hours to dry! I finally got a clothes rack and started hanging it in front of a fan to speed things up. Once dry, I re-displayed.

This weekend I'm not soaking, just dunking in the bowls of water, hanging what will fit on the clothes rack and laying the rest on paper towels.

For those growing this stuff indoors…how do you care for it?

Oh, and the smell…it kinda smells like hay when wet which wouldn't be bad in small amounts but when dealing with the mother load…🤢

I’m going to be honest here… as a Floridian, I never thought about the Spanish moss (which is literally on almost every oak tree around) as something to bring inside to have as an air plant, let alone to buy it to do!?! 😂

I am so intrigued at this point (due to my recent dip into the land of air plants) that I may actually go grab some and soak it for inside my house now. lol

Thank you for sharing your experience on this!!!

I am at my mom’s house in Florida at the moment and was literally contemplating me from home to try this out. Excellent timing!

I have never seen anything like this before. But it looks beautiful. I hope it works out for you

For those in Florida or similar places thinking about being it inside…it’s very often full of critters and pests.

Well, I have a bunch of it too indoors but I definitely use a tub lol! You can buy one of those storage tubs from Walmart or whatever and just fill it up in your bathroom and add dechlorinator and then dump them all in there. Then buy a big towel and put it over a table and then lay them all out and put a fan on them. The soaks are 30mins once a week for me and then I set them out to dry for a few hours. During the week I mist it twice or three times and that’s it.
