Hey everyone!
My boyfriend and I are looking for some input about a large oak in our yard that’s developed a pretty gnarly lean toward the house.
I’m no expert, but I’m preeeetty sure trees are not supposed to have sharp angles with 100% of the canopy weight on one side lol.
There’s a visible cavity at the base that also looks sketchy to me because it’s deep and possibly looks like internal decay?
Our soil is extremely sandy and erodes easily, which makes root stability a concern so I feel like the next heavy storm it might rip out of the ground and destroy the water pipes next to it along with the house or retaining wall if it lands on them.
We’re planning to call an arborist for an in-person inspection, but wanted to get feedback from this community first to see whether this looks like something that might be stabilized with pruning or other mitigation, or if removal is the safest route.
Any insights, red flags, or questions we should ask the arborist when they come out would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance!

At some point, yes, it will fall on the house

This tree needs to be looked at by an ISA Certified Arborist. Please do not just go with Mr Larry Chainsaw. He’ll be hungover anyway 😉

This tree is very likely to be in danger but it’s impossible to give a time estimate with just photos and or videos.
