Proof that with $20, a little dirt, and a lot of love, you can grow groceries and joy

Looks like my rainbow carrot harvest. If it’s the same variety, those yellow ones are e a r t h y. I have opted not to use them after doing so in a stew. We ate around them lol the white, purple, pink, and orange varieties were all fantastic, though!

Yeah carrots are hit and miss but at least most of yours are decent

Yeah you won’t save money to start but you will build a skill. Leave a couple extra plants in the ground and collect the seeds for next year. Make soil with several different compost piles. If food gets scarce those carrots will be worth much more than 4$ to you. Every year we grow we find a way to make it a little cheaper
RobertoNotRobotDevil
I’ll buy them for $7

But think of how little you’ll have to spend next year to do it!

Two things: you won’t have the same expenses next year, and you happened to choose a cheap, slow-growing, single harvest vegetable. Fast-growing vegetables pass like radishes or greens, or multi-fruiting produce like zucchini or tomatoes will get you more bang for your buck.

Hopefully they taste amazing. Are carrots are way better then store bought
AdmiralStickyLegs
The carrots you buy from the supermarket are nothing like what you grow, though.
The flavor is so different it may as well be a different plant
awgeezwhatnow
Oh but the *flavor* the *snap* of fresh carrots! 😍
HappyGardener2727
If it helps you can make chimichurri with the leaves.

But carrots and potatoes are two veggies you definitely notice a difference in taste. Even just buying organic is very noticeable.

Yes, i stopped growing some things because of the efforts needed. Carrots were one of them.

I try to tell myself I’m not growing my own food to save money but to have food security.

I know I just paid like a dollar a carrot. My first thought was, “that’s more like 15 dollars in carrots” which I think is a win!!!

Small scale is necessarily more expensive. Soil (I think you mean potting mix, real soil is free) is reusable, seeds and fertilizer can be home made.
Keep in mind your carrots are luxury organic products, while the 4$ carrots are probably large scale shit stuff.

$16 for three months of a hobby seems cheap.

Welcome to gardening. I probably pay $200 a year for $40 in organic vegetables.

Why not buy a bunch of water and an expensive raised bed too? How about a cold frame. You gotta pump up those production numbers. Those are rookie numbers.

Home grown carrots taste a 100x better than any store bought carrot.
Livid-Writer-7741
Wasn’t it great being outside, hearing the birds, hoping for rain, watching them grow, and doing something for yourself?
FreakyWifeFreakyLife
No, those are organic heirloom…. It’s at least $6. And the soil is still good, so is the container, and those were the expensive parts.
So, you have better fresher food, and you have a system for production. The only way you lose is if you quit now.
