Monetary donations were made to two organizations during the October meeting of the Carrollton Garden Club.

The club donated funds to the Carrollton Boy Scouts for summer watering and to the Wreaths Across America project, which places wreaths on local veterans’ graves.

Club member Vickie Reed provided a monthly treat to residents of the Golden Age Retreat.

The October program was presented by Beth Zabasnik from Snode’s. In recognition of the club’s bench donations, her husband, Paul Zabasnik, made small benches that members decorated with fall flowers.

Five members attended the fall District Garden Club of Ohio meeting in Canton: Ruth Ann Capper, Mary Huffman, Nellie Nye, Vickie Reed and Darlene Smith.

Debra Turner, president of the Garden Club of Ohio, introduced the new state theme “Plant a Future.” Dr. Nate Sikora, a Canton chiropractor, presented the morning program titled “Grow Well: How Chiropractic Helps Your Garden with Support and Balance.”

Sikora shared gardening techniques for aging gardeners, including using tools with padded handles, building raised beds, alternating tasks every 15 minutes, using leg strength rather than back muscles, and wearing gloves with grips.

The afternoon program, “Fur, Feathers and Scales,” was presented by Amy Rich and Ryanne Deering of Raptor Hollow in Alliance. They shared information about skunks, a Burmese python, an owl, a turkey vulture and a coati. Each animal was allowed to move freely around the room during the presentation.

The club’s next meeting will be Nov. 3 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on 12th Street NW in Carrollton. Members will make Christmas decorations for the McCook House Christmas tree.
