Members of Wick and District Gardening Club enjoyed a talk and slide show on growing and caring for cacti at their recent AGM.

Their guest speaker in the town’s Nethercliffe Hotel was Allan Armitage, who lives in St Margaret’s Hope in Orkney.

He explained that he had started growing cacti from seed and that he now has more than 3000 cacti at his home. Mr Armitage brought many examples with him and quite a few have remained behind in Caithness to be tended over by some of the members of the club.

Anyone interested in growing cacti can contact Mr Armitage by email at armitageallan130@gmail.com or telephone 01856 831427.

In September the club held a successful plant sale which raised £400 for the Caithness Heart Support Group. A cheque was presented to Joyce MacDonald and Marge Donaldson by Marney Bruce and Jeanette Coghill.

The committee remains unchanged for the coming year with Marney Bruce as chairperson, Lilian Wark as vice-chairperson, Virginia Miller as secretary and Jeanette Coghill as treasurer.

New members or anyone interested in gardening will be made welcome. The club usually meets in the Nethercliffe Hotel on the second Tuesday of each month.

The next meeting, however, will be held on Tuesday, November 18, starting at 2pm.
