In this video, you’ll discover whether it’s still possible to plant brassicas like broccoli and cabbage in late October and what factors to consider.
We’re seeing shortages of basic items, with food being among them. I hope this video inspires and makes others realize that growing food in a suburban setting can be done. The backyard grocery store never has empty shelves! Happy Gardening!

As the weather cools, many gardeners wonder if it’s too late to plant their favorite brassacas for a successful harvest. The answer to that is not a simple yes or no. It depends upon several factors. The most important being the zone that you live in. Here in zone 9, Florida, I can grow brassacas pretty much up until my first frost. And I really don’t get that until sometime in uh December or even later. Now, brassacas can survive light frost down to about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. [Music] Good morning, YouTube, and welcome back to my channel. We’re outside. It’s a comfortable 54 degrees and we’re going to plant some more brassacas. We’re going to plant them in what is the largest raised bed that I have. However, I’ve never really used it other than to plant cucumbers in. So, first and foremost, we’re going to remove the remaining cucumber plants. We’re going to amend the soil and then we’re going to plant the rest of my brascas that I have. Let’s So this is my very first raised bed that I received from a um company. It is the Anolife and I received this down in South Florida. Um I made a video and after I put it together, I’ll put the link for that up on the screen. However, I never grew anything in it in South Florida because my HOA wouldn’t allow it. So, we’re going to go ahead and remove all of these plants that are here uh via time lapse and then we’re going to come back and amend the bed. So, as you can see, the bed has been cleaned and amended. We have nice straight drip lines and perlite, fertilizer, compost, and a bunch of other stuff in. And now we’re going to actually do the planting. But before we do that, I want to show you what I was not expecting when we took out the volunteer sweet potato vines. Let me lift you up a little bit so you can see me. And here are sweet potatoes. And since I used a pitchfork to get them out, some of them have been scraped up. But it also looks like something was eating um eating on them inside the bed. But considering that I didn’t plant these here and these were volunteer, I’m pretty happy about it. Now, the first thing that we’re going to plant are Bellstar broccoli. And we’re going to plant them along this strip line here. There are one, two, there are five of them. So, we’re going to do like I normally do any plant. We’re going to go along the drip line. Go down to my knuckles. Drop some soil. I’m sorry, some fertilizer in. Mix it around. We’re going to go over to the second admitter here and do the same thing. This will be the fourth one. BR. Okay. And just pop it out of its home. Drop it in. Put the label up at the top. We got one more of those to do. So, we’ll put the label here. Then all we’re going to do is back fill and press down. and and just like that, we have our first variety of broccoli. And we’re going to do another variety down here. And we have this is the green magic. And we’re going to plant three of those. Maybe four. One. And we’re going to put the label for these right here. Back fill these in. Okay, next we’re going to go over to the other side and start in the middle with some I think these are mustards or cabbage. Some more cabbages and So, we got all the plants in and now we are going to water them. Give them a thorough drinking. And we have um mustards, cabbage, and broccoli. bed. Took um or I put uh eight bags of soil in. And I put I want to say like 5 lbs of compost. And we also put in um general tomato fertilizer, some bone meal, and some blood meal. Now, as far as where you live at as on planting broccololis this time, since we’re close to the end of October, and as I said in the opening, it really depends upon where you live at and whether or not your uh frost meets the temperature uh ranges that I gave you in the beginning of the video for brassacas. Um, here in Florida, at least on North Florida, um, it doesn’t come anywhere close to that. So, pretty much we can grow year round. Uh, although there is a caveat to that. As I said, last year was uh the out outliner where um we got ice and snow. Now, that doesn’t happen every year. And even last year the brascas that I planted loved it. Um after the snow melted and everything, I initially thought that I had killed my plants cuz I didn’t cover them or anything like that. But they survived and not only survived, but flourished afterwards. So, I hope you enjoyed the video and you got something out of it. I hope I answered some questions that you may have had concerning brassacas as far as if you can plant them late in October. If you enjoyed the video, give me a thumbs up, leave me a comment, good, bad, or indifferent, and I will reply. If you haven’t subscribed to my channel, take a moment to consider doing so. I can grow a lot of food by myself, but I cannot grow a channel without your help. If you do decide to subscribe, don’t forget to hit the notification bell all so you’ll be notified whenever I upload new content. Chances are if you like my content, your family and friends will also, so it’s okay to share. And think about hyping this video up. The more hype, the more the algorithm notices it and I can get more views. for the video. And again, with this particular raised bed, uh I’ll put the link for the uh video on it in the on the screen. But this is the original raised bed, my first original raised bed that I had down in South Florida. And I actually didn’t grow anything in it until we moved back to the homestead. So until next time, always remember to give your thanks to God for without him we are nothing. Stay blessed, stay strong and grow, grow, grow. [Music]

Happy gardening 🪴❣️
Good morning! Thank you! Can you address pesticides & winter protection? Thanks!
We are in the same zone according to the almanac.
Do you think I have enough time just to sow some more broccoli directly in a raised bed or just put in the hydroponic for a couple of weeks and then plant them?
Thanks for sharing the video 🌱😊
❤ HOA's suck! I'd never pay for some agency to rule over me and my property. That being said, I love your surprise sweet potato harvest!😊 Your garden looks so neat and clean. Good luck with your brassicas.😊

hello. beautiful garden. like it.
Good Morning! At least you got away from that HOA lol! That looks like a really nice raised bed. And you were blessed with a Volunteer 😁 I’m finding out what Brassicas can handle right now, as I type this it’s 30 degrees outside. My Broccoli is way too big for me to cover so now it has become a learning project.
Harika paylaşim teşekkürler❤❤❤❤
So peaceful out there. Thanks for sharing, freind.
It must be so rewarding to be in a space and place where you can plant and plant and plant 😁 happy gardening! 🪴
