A good friend gifted me this beautiful Monstera recently and it’s pretty large. Seems overgrown to me compared to some of the amazing Monsteras I’ve seen here on this sub.

Couple questions:

• Should I cut some of the smaller stuff off and thin it out/open it up?

• It’s never had a moss pole, is it too late to start trying to kind of train it to grow upwards instead of what it’s been doing?

I really like this plant and don’t want to mess it up, but it’s too overgrown and doesn’t look the way I want it to. So many of the beautiful plants I see here don’t have all those smaller leaves on the bottom. I’ve never had a monstera this size, so I decided to ask the experts here.

  • Disregard the string visible in the pics, I was going to try to tie it off to shape it up a bit, but I changed my mind and it’s been removed.

  • Any white stuff you see on the leaves is Sheetrock dust from some work I was doing over the plant or it’s just water spots. Thankfully there are no pests on this plant.

it seems overgrown because there’s probably many plants stuffed in one pot. if you plan on using a moss pole, it’ll be best to separate all the plants out so they can be properly supported.

Without a picture of the base/pot…it appears that you have multiple plants on your hands. You’ll definitely want to separate it, but IMO don’t do anything right now. It’s in a new environment, wait until late Spring. In the meantime…bottom water every couple of weeks, don’t worry about staking it at this point, needs a LOT of light (directly in front of a well insulated window, or get a grow light). When the clocks Spring forward be ready to separate it.

I think if you staked the stems that would automatically create a neater look and the leaves wouldn’t be so splayed out it would give the plant a more controlled look and the leaves would be more in an adjusted upright position. My monstera is about 6ft tall and it’s been staked for a couple of years it’s supported the leaves and kept the plant in a more upright position.
