Onslow County Extension Master Gardener volunteers hosted a seed and plant exchange Monday at the main branch of the Onslow County Public Library, with more than 75 people in attendance.
Emilee Morrison, N.C. State Cooperative Extension agent, and 15 master gardeners were on-hand to assist participants who came prepared with packets of herb, vegetable and flower seeds, as well as houseplants.
Hundreds of packets and thousands of seeds were exchanged free of cost, said Michael Brenyo, extension master gardener volunteer.
Participants were able to talk to master gardeners and N.C. State Cooperative Extension agents for tips, advice and encouragement in pursuit of their gardening.
The Extension Master Gardener Program is a national program of trained volunteers who work in partnership with their county Cooperative Extension office to expand educational outreach throughout the community by providing home gardeners with research-based information.
Trainees receive 40 hours of instruction from experts on a broad spectrum of subjects applicable to home gardening, such as plant nutrition, soils, vegetable and fruit culture, trees, shrubs and lawns, diseases and insects, and others, Brenyo said.
Anyone interested in becoming an extension master gardener can send their name, address, phone number and email to emilee_morrison@ncsu.edu or call 910-455-5873.
