This winter, the San Francisco Botanical Garden will be transformed with over a million lights, turning into an interactive art installation that welcomes visitors to the sprawling gardens after dark. The show, aptly called Lightscape, has traveled around the world, partnering with incredible gardens and locations in the UK, Europe, and Australia.
The light installation will open on November 21 and run through January 4th, perfect for a holiday outing. Visitors can expect a “light trail” that stretches one mile, with displays from various artists on the way. Water features and sculptures will also be along the trail to complete the installation.

“We are excited to bring this world-renowned show to shine a new light on our beloved Botanical Garden,” said Gardens of Golden Gate Park CEO Stephanie Linder. “Visitors to the Garden will thoroughly enjoy this immersive experience, unlike anything San Francisco venues have offered before. Following sold-out shows in cities around the world, we look forward to transforming the Garden into an enchanting, festive, after-dark spectacle where family and friends celebrate and make memories. We are thrilled to launch and welcome locals and visitors to experience the wonder of Lightscape.”
The installation offers a unique way to experience the 55-acre botanical garden, and you can sip on warm beverages and treats while you explore the illuminated trail. Tickets are available in 15-minute time slots, and tickets are on sale now. The installation is family-friendly, and children will be welcome to explore the trail. Tickets start at $32 for adults and $20 for children.

Lightscape will join various other holiday light displays in the Bay Area, including Filoli Estate’s annual light displays and the Ruth Bancroft Garden’s winter installation. In the past year, Golden Gate Park has hosted Entwined, featuring trees made of LED lights to create a glowing forest in the park.
