I found these four poor plants on the clearance shelf at Home Depot for $2.50 apiece so I brought them home. They’re probably pest-ridden, so right now they’re sealed in a brown paper bag in my garage lol.
First, can I get some help with IDs? I figure Proven Winners made up these names because the accurate botanical names probably aren’t cutesy enough, nor do they fit into an ocean theme.
I’m not really a hoya person yet (I have one “pink” variegated carnosa that’s doing okay) but I would like to rehab this scraggly foursome. Obviously they’ll be quarantined. Should I repot them right away to get rid of pesty soil? I’m also going to hose them down with Deadbug.
What kind of soil would they like? I have lots of substrates on hand to mix up something specific. Would they benefit from growlight time during quarantine? All my naturally sunny spots are already occupied.
Any other advice?

i just bought one of these too! but i’m so far down the road now…
Congrats! I believe the sea stones are H. aff. burtoniae, and the adrift is H. rosita. The teacup might be fitchii.
How interesting that they all have a word in their type that has to do with the ocean! 🌊
oh i didn’t realize there were four pics! my home depot only had the sea stones and the adrift, and the adrift looked like one i already had so i didn’t get it. will keep an eye out for the other two. would love to find the teacup one.
Welcome! This is where it started for me 6 months ago. Now have over 50 and I’m buying 2 leaf cuttings for $350.
This is how I started this year! My favorite of the PW I got, was the carnosa splash.
I started in June/July 2025, now I have 13. Oh 1 cutting died. So I had 14 at one point. I will stop buying starting…tomorrow. 🫣
Congrats!!! The carnosa ‘freckles splash’ is a splashy carnosa, and the ‘adrift’ is a rosita. I have both of these, also rescued from the Home Depot clearance! I believe the ‘sea stones’ is a burtoniae, I don’t have one but it’s on my want list.
The soil they come in usually holds way too much water (mine were very soggy when I brought them home, all my HD plants usually are.) For all my hoyas I use a mix of about 50% orchid bark mix, 40% indoor potting mix, and 10% perlite, give or take. They all seem to like it.
They prefer a bright light, and I water when the soil is mostly but not completely.

I got this one last week. I’m obsessed with the bright red new leaves
That’s awesome! I was surprised but my fav from all of those (having been growing them since Feb-ish of this year) is my Rosita and the Carnosa ‘Freckled Spalsh’! Both grow so well and vigorously for me—and take my north-west window exposure very well—that they’re my best growers! But I enjoy all of them! My “teacup” (Hoya fitchii) is a good grower too even though I struggled in the beginning 🫣
But where did you pick these up? Like what state and store?? I find them since the summer, hard to find!
And so it begins. Those are great finds for $2.50! I use either orchid bark or a combination of mulched wood and potting soil for mine. Grow lights have worked very well for my plants during the Winter. I have strip lights.

Sea stones looks like this with good light! I do all of mine in semi hydro with a mix of Leca and Pon….they do extremely well! My Fitchii is below her!
