The thorns look like a rose, I would say it’s definitely in the rose family.

My guess would be a dwarf ornamental rose. They are popular amongst growers but lose value when not in flower so including as a freebie to move stock certainly wouldn’t be out the question. I’ve seen cats chew rose flowers and their leaves, although not to the extent of stripping a plant, so it would certainly back up that idea.
The only other plant that sprang to mind was Euphorbia Milii, although most varieties have more thorns. I would say its unlikely but worth a double check as the plants sap can be irritating and make animals ill if indegested.
