This species has a very interesting backstory. It’s a living fossil. Thought to have been extinct for tens of millions of years until a single remaining stand of it was found in China in the 1940s. Now it’s common in cultivation all over the world. It actually does better outside of its relict native range, so there’s a chance that it’s the tallest tree in the world, even taller than a Coast Redwood, but none of the planted specimens outside of China have had time to attain maximum height. I don’t believe that, though, but it’d be cool if it was true.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t dawn redwood cover the northern hemisphere before multiple ice ages nearly killed it?
