I've seen some comments on here that say planting clumping bamboo is fine. We've just had to pay a bamboo removal company to destroy our patio and retaining wall because our neighbour's clumping bamboo, which has been planted for over 15 years, decided to spread into our garden. You can still see the roots on their side. We've had to put a bamboo barrier in because they've refused to remove it properly on their side. Just a warning for everyone. There's still more to get dug out.

Thanks! Imma go plant me some clumping bamboo now.
People who say “its ok its clumping bamboo” have never had to dig one up.
People say to plant it as it spreads slower or hardly at all. It’s took 15years to get over you side, so it not exactly a fast grower.
They should have kept on top of it when they saw it was heading your way.
Doesn’t look much like clumping bamboo to me. Clumping bamboo doesn’t spread.
It’s ok to have bamboo and it gives you a yearly crop of useful canes. But best to keep it under control so you don’t have to do all this pulling up in one go. The key is containment.
One man’s clumping bamboo is another man’s problem 🎍
I just wanted to comment on this as I’ve made several YouTube vids suggesting planting clumping bamboo. Firstly, sorry you’ve been affected by your neighbour’s planting / lack of maintenance, that’s frustrating to say the least. Secondly, I would add that although clumping bamboo can not ‘run’ – travel large distances under the soil via rhizome and pop up elsewhere – they can and will spread to varying degrees so it’s important to choose the right variety and location like with any plant. A tree would have maybe caused similar damage in this situation. Thirdly though, and this is the most important thing, is to keep on top of the bamboo with regular maintenance and that’s where this has gone wrong.
Would you say you’be been bamboozled?
not exactly the “pile” i was expecting, especially as you paid somebody to take that “bucket full’ away…
taken out bigger mint roots…
Can’t you pour some petrol and burn the roots without burning your house down?

Non clumping, easy enough to maintain, great hedge
true runners would be in your front garden by now. but yeah any plant that spreads will. blackberries for example.
I’m more worried about your fence……
For curiosity was it a specialist bamboo removal company? And how much did they cost.
Completely agree with not planting bamboo in the ground. Nightmare when established
