One of the aims of the Environmental Committee of the Garden Club of LBI  is protecting the Island and its beaches, surrounding land, bays and the ocean.

John Weber of Oceana recently provided the committee with ways individuals can help protect the sea, including writing letters to officials and helping pass resolutions opposing expanded offshore gas and oil drilling. The website stopthedrill.org has updated information.

Oceana is an international, nonprofit organization dedicated to conservation of the oceans. Weber is the Mid-Atlantic field representative. In his program he spoke of his love for LBI, going back to summers at his grandmother’s house. He also worked with Surfrider, the activist organization devoted to ocean and beach protection.

Also on the agenda for the committee, in collaboration with Weber, is a showing of “We Are All Plastic People,” the noted film on plastic pollution and how it can be reduced. The showing is planned for the spring at the Long Beach Island Branch of the Ocean County Library in Surf City.

Weber was instrumental in efforts to ban plastic bags and balloon releases in New Jersey. He was appointed by Gov. Phil Murphy to the New Jersey Plastics Advisory Council, and has also worked for the New Jersey Environmental Federation and NJ Citizen Action.  —E.E.
