This was my parent’s house in Los Angeles. My brother and I plan to rent it. This palm tree has been there forever. We have mixed opinions on whether to keep it or remove it and, if so, what to put in that area. The second picture is more recent (after trimming it). Appreciate any feedback?

I love the palm. I would keep it. You are not going to find any replacement anywhere near as attractive and interesting without spending a lot of money.

The only way to keep it would be to half dig it out so trunk can be tilted and it can grow out from under the porch. That’s ridiculous. Sadly it needs to go. Possibly it could be transplanted in a shady spot somewhere else.

A tropical plant with multiple stems? When the tallest hits the ceiling remove it and new shoots should continue to grow in. Bamboo, lady and parlor palms are possibilities. Not bamboo, bamboo palm…

I’d live without adding another plant for a while. It’s very dim under there and you may prefer having it more open.

Cut it and replace with a fake or a dwarf palm tree

My family had to take out a massive bird of paradise that was just way too big for our shady patio, and honestly, it opened everything up and made it feel less crowded. We waited before adding anything else too, just to see how much light and space we actually had and turns out, we liked it open for a while.

  5. That thing is way too big for the space, and has to go. I would remove it and then just take in the space for a bit before doing anything more. You may find the openness preferable to dense foliage
