I have a pretty wild lawn in San Francisco. I sort of enjoy the subtle chaos of a few species of grass competing to survive. I have a dog so I keep things mowed high and watered 3x a week to avoid yellow spots. This is what my lawn looks like after a week of not being mowed. I have yet to use a pre-emergent.

Do I have too much clover? It’s naturally occurring (not seeded). I worry that it’s starting to dominate the fescue and shading it beyond a healthy amount.

What would you do?

Do you think you have too much clover? It’s totally up to you. Clover is good for a lawn if you don’t mind how it looks. I’ve been overseeing with a bag of clover here or there to introduce it into my yard because I like it and it stays green.

I personally think it looks great

Bros yard looks better than 90% of everyone else.

    I would do nothing.

clover adds nitrogen to your lawn and works well in shade. If you had thistle or Creeping Charlie I would be worried.

I have the same thing happening here in St. Louis. As others have said, I really don’t mind clover as it’s good for the yard and attracts bees, which will be great for my garden in the spring. At the end of the day it’s lush and green, which is what I am after

Not sure how you got pictures of my lawn… I have a bunch of clover all over. Neighbors next to me used to plant clover in their lawn years ago. I gave up trying to stop it

I think the answer is subjective to you. I have similar amounts of clover patches and up here we don’t have access to the same sprays. I’ve read that fixing the nitrogen imbalance with fertilizer and overseeding will give grass a chance to outcompete so I’m going to try that. If it doesn’t work, as others have mentioned, it’s green and good for bees, so I won’t cry too much.

It’s harder to kill than clover 😩

Not too much now but it spreads thick and quick. Nothing wrong with a low dose of SpeedZone or something similar

Are you feeding your dog oxtail treats?

No such thing as too much clover.
