A while back (January) I posted my concerns about my larches. For a larch’s standards, I didn’t know if I would be able to provide them a sufficient winter in our warm zone 9 winters (we got down to 36F). I brought it out of the basement stairwell on 3/21, let it grow until 9/21, when I brought back into the stairwell. Every few days I cover the soil in freezer ice so the soil stays cold. Within 2 weeks I noticed fall colors starting, despite the constant temperature being around 50F.
Hopefully they stay dormant until at least the beginning of March.

Genius! Dod you come up with this yourself or have you seen this method?

After getting them into dormancy, you can keep them in the refrigerator.

It might just be poor image quality, but they look like they might be dead to me.

  4. I think it’s going to be difficult to get them the necessary number of cold hours. They might live for a few years even, but a better long term solution will be needed. A fridge could work, but it’s also easy to desiccate them in a fridge.
