Nursery offers tips to prepare for the first frost of the season.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The first freeze of the season is on its way to the metro area. If you have special plants in your yard, that means it’s time to protect them.

Experts at Alameda Greenhouse suggest watering plants deeply right before the frost sets in. They say this will allow root system to prepare and will warm the soil temperature.

“It actually warms the soil temperature about ten degrees or so, just so that the frost does not reach and penetrate to the roots,” said Sarah Jane, the manager of Alameda Greenhouse.

Jane says workers at the greenhouse are preparing by getting frost cloth ready, which they say will keep frost off the neck and flesh of the plant. She says if you don’t have a frost cloth, even a cloak or a sheet will help.

Mulch and compost are also recommended as layers to help protect plants and root systems.

For new gardeners, Jane says there are plenty of options to help extend the growing season.

“Don’t be afraid of the frost because it’s nature and it’s just going to happen,” Jane said.

Albuquerque area residents still have time to prepare. The first freeze is predicted to arrive between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning.
