Over four years after its closure the former Sweeney’s Garden Centre in New Ross is set to welcome a new occupant. In addition, it is expected that the person taking over the premises will operate a garden centre business on the site.
Requesting an update on the site, Councillor Michael Sheehan said the derelict property gave visitors a “dismal” impression of the town when arriving for the first time.
“I know there are legal issues at play but can we please, as a matter of urgency, do something with it?” he asked at the October meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD). “If we could even just tidy it up while we’re waiting for the bigger project to be approved. At the moment it presents the town in a very sorry light.”
However, director of services Eamonn Hore was able to go one better.
“We have a person who is interested in developing it as a garden centre,” he said. “There’s just one issue to be resolved with the valuation, that will be sorted in the next week or two. But we’ll have an occupant there before too long.”
