For context I live in Monterrey, Mexico. I’ve never seen a tree like this before and i was running at night, almost tripped on the sidewalk and put my hand on it.

Yep, *Ceiba speciosa*. It’s native here in Argentina, from the northern parts of the country. Destroys sidewalks but people love it anyway.

The native name for this species in particular is *samohú*.

Evil spine tree. But those arent considered spines. Those are external protuberances of the stem. They are part of the stem. They are different from the “real” spines that you find in cactus.

Silk floss tree. They were all over my town as a kid. Socal. Mean bully kid used to push little kids into them while walking home from school. Fun times 🤪. Not

I was hoping this tree would appear on this thread. I saw one when I was living in Sherman Oaks, California fifteen years ago. Never could figure it out, as someone told me it was a “Dinosaur Tree.” Alas, they were mistaken.
