Have a 110yr old cork oak in my backyard. Its a stunning tree with so much character, but last year started to sprout fungus. I assume this means the tree is doomed, esp with how horizontal its grown. Anything one can do to try and save it? Remove the main horizontal trunk? The tree still looks and grows healthy.

From what I can tell it seems to be doing fine. I’m not familiar with that fungus but it could just be feeding on dead wood, may be the start of a decline 🤷🏼♂️ but the canopy looks lively. You could put a post under the tree to support it if you’re interested. Seen a lot of crazy spread out oak limbs supported by posts and poles, Put a few in myself.
Looks like a Shaggy Bracket to me. I’m not entirely certain if that’s something thats a common in Cork Oaks, but that would be my best guess based on the fruiting body pictured. If that’s the case, it is a pathogenic heartwood rot species.
All that mumbo jumbo roughly translates to no good, and you definitely should call an arborist out to have a look.
