I attended a seed swap yesterday and picked up this little Eastern Redbud in a 1 quart pot. Since it's so small I'm thinking I should keep it in the house this winter and plant it out in the spring. But then I think it appears to be in a good bit of the soil from where it was dug up so maybe it has enough roots to go in the ground? 🤔

What would you do?

I’d plant it so that it doesn’t dry out and die from being inside a heated house. Put a little bit of chicken wire around it to protect it from animals.

  2. Plant outside so it can grow in its natural conditions. I put a cage around those young trees and shrubs so they don’t get eaten or trampled.

I don’t really like to plant out very small tree seedlings, there’s just too many variables – maybe it won’t make it, maybe you’ll change your mind on location, maybe you don’t want to dedicate the space to it just yet etc.

Small seedling like that, I’d leave it outside against a North facing wall in a bucket of leaves. Probably would leave it in a pot for at least another year or two, potting up as required.

I would put it in the ground asap. Redbuds live outside. It will not be happy indoors and it could easily get too dry. Protect it as others have said (or not depending on how cavalier you are about that. I have a volunteer Cornus alternifolia. Left it right where it is. If the rabbits are hungry and eat it, so be it. A little more protective if I paid for the plant.
