Sugar maple has had trunk damage for many years. Exposed area is soft like a sponge. Will this tree recover from this and be a viable mature tree (and safe)? Or should I plant something new?
If you like the tree, I would say give it some time. I don’t know enough about if it will recover or not. But it does not seem to the near any structures so the risk is pretty low to give it time.

How tall is it?
Will it be able to reach the road or structures etc. if it falls?

no visible targets to hit there decay is present but it’s not the end of the world I’d recommend some fertilizer and barks sprays to keep critters away removal wouldn’t be my first option.

Was it mulched too deep which caused this

It’ll take awhile but it can heal. Meaning years till it heals completely.

Looks like it was possibly mulched too deep, not allowed rootflare, ringed, etc; which possibly caused or contributed to this condition. If it ever does recover it’ll still be a hazard because of the nature of the beast that is maple.

It’s already recovering
