Hello all, I have a tree in my backyard that seems to be getting eaten from the inside. Looking at the exterior I see holes and what appears to be dust or waste piles. It's also weak to the touch. I'm also seeing discoloration around the base of the tree.

Would love to know if I should make the move to remove the tree or if that's premature.

Definitely some decay, but it looks like there’s some reaction wood there. Hard to say. Given how close it is to the house, I’d definitely get an arborist out in person to give an opinion.

Would be helpful to see the whole tree including the canopy. Yes it’s having an issue but that doesn’t mean you need to remove it right away. Search for a local ISA Certified Arborist to come out and give an assessment on the tree.

Absolutely get a certified arborist there to look at it in person. From the pics it appears that there is significant decay, likely cause from girdling roots, and likely phytophthora canker, possibly some sort of fungal mat under the bark (if that is foam that I see). You will almost definitely be advised to remove the tree, but get someone there in person.

Seriously though, have a risk assessment done and then go from there
