Is the sap bubbling out of the tree anywhere? It’s likely that the tree is harboring a bacteria that is fermenting its sap, which makes it attractive to butterflies. This happened to my giant live oak one year and it freaked me out, but the tree recovered on its own. If the tree looks unwell, though, you might need an arborist.
