Hello!

I found this variegated alocasia frydek at a farm stand on a 50 degree day. I am brand new as an alocasia plant owner but I have her with my monstera Albo and Thai constellation who have great indirect light and humidity. Is there anything else I should consider/know?

Ok I love these. Mine was also the first and only plant to bring spider mites around. Especially coming from outside, I would keep it away from your monstera for at least a month. Treat with rubbing alcohol (I don’t dilute, but you can). I don’t know how far you’re willing to go as far as repotting so I won’t say much there since a lot of methods are fine. Get it a personal grow light if need be while in quarantine.

My saga…I found one little strand going across one leaf, which was the only indication of mites I noticed except for I had wondered why my Green Velvet’s leaves as started going yellow. The two plant’s leaves were touching and I saw a little webbing on that one too at that point. This was after only one initial pest treatment on Frydek and a few weeks of quarantine. That one came from a specialty plant shop. Good luck…I love these and mine grows faster that my green velvet now.

Dont pot up big. they like airy soil. they also produce corms to make new plants, so when repotting check for baby corms bit be sure to leave one as its a backup reserve if the plant goes through a rough patch. By the roots it’ll have one large main corm, don’t mess w that one..lol. Also they are heavy feeders. Ive had great sucess w fluval/gravel mix as a substrate and just keep a bowl of water under it. Idk how often to water it w reg soil as mine is a semi hydro setup for my babies.
