Plant NOOB here. I really don’t know any of the terminology or anatomy of a plant. All I know is this Calathea I bought from Trader Joe’s months ago was doing just fine until my asshole spoiled dogs destroyed my favorite plant.

Will someone please tell me what to do? Specifically how to clean her up properly to foster some healthy regrowth. I don’t know where to trim or even I even should? Please be specific and explain the terminology like you’re talking to a 5 year old…like I said, complete noob thus far.

Also included some photos of the culprits. I should have known better. Assholes, I tell you.

I’m a noob also but my favorite plant person on TikTok, Krystal, always says “if there’s green, there’s something to save,” so I think someone will have some proper advice for you. Good luck and welcome to the club!

Always watch out with plants in the future some can be verry toxic to dogs ext

  3. She’s fine! Plants are made to survive, calatheas can come back from just roots, you have nothing to worry about.

Also those mischievous dogs are VERY cute 💖

  4. I too, have assholes. Mine are of the feline persuasion tho, my dogs leave my plants alone. Thankfully, calatheas are safe for dogs – so there’s one issue down!

I would simply cut back the damaged leaves, this will give the plant an opportunity to focus energy towards regrowth. If the plant itself was healthy to start with, new growth should start coming in almost straight away! If they’ve used the plant as a pee-post, I would do a complete repot into some fresh soil, rinsing off the entire plant (roots and leaves) before putting it into the fresh soil.

This is definitely far from dead, just battle wounds!

Edit to add: don’t be alarmed if she gets wilted or droopy in the process. Calatheas like to pitch a fit at the slightest changes, but will adjust

These will sprout new leaves as long as the rhizome is intact.
