Hello all!
I have a couple weedy, likely volunteer elms behind my house and I’ve noticed the bark on one of them (the one on the right) has changed and is looking odd in a long tall strip.
First of all, no I don’t usually have leaves and debris piled up against them, that’s just temporary while we build compost bins.
You’ll notice an indented ring around the trunk. When we moved in a couple years ago we noticed the previous owner had left a dog leash tied around it. The arborist we hired had to cut it off. 🙄
Obviously this is not the ideal place to have a tree, between retaining wall and sidewalk and right next to the house. And I cursed the things this summer as I weeded 8 trillion elm seedlings. But they’re on the east side of the house and do give us shade, and the birds hang out in them, so I’m inclined to leave them as long as possible.
Would appreciate any thoughts on whether this is something to be concerned about. Thank you!
