@gardening.with.ish on TikTok has shared how to make slugs and snails “stay away from your garden plants. He said: “If slugs are getting to your plants still, then this is your final line of defence.” He claimed that all you need is a bulb of garlic, water and a spray bottle.
The gardening expert explained that garlic contains an amazing compound that “slugs detest the smell and taste of” – it makes any plant “taste absolutely disgusting”.
As a result, not only will these pests “stay away from them”, they “won’t eat them” either.
To make the garlic spray, take 200ml of water and add three or four crushed or finely diced garlic cloves. Leave the garlic to soak for about a day or two.
This will now have a compound in it known as allicin, which is the sulfuric taste and smell that you expect from garlic that slugs “absolutely hate”.
Next, add more water to the mixture – roughly up to about one litre or so to make it safe to use on your plants. Lastly, finish up by straining the solution and pouring it into a spray bottle.
This can then be lightly misted over most of your plants, like your hostas and other vulnerable plants that are usually eaten by slugs.
You can do this every week or so to create a little bit of a film on the plants for slugs and snails to “stay firmly away”.
