A lot of times we get folks in the sub asking if their tree is done for due to a crack. This is a red maple that my arborist partner was able to bolt back together after a microburst split it down the middle 8yrs ago. She’s beautiful most would have cut it down. Healed wonderfully
There's also a 1 inch stainless rod through the crotch up top but it's two heeled over to see from the ground.
If it ever gets cut down in the future they sure are in for a fun surprise

It shows it can keep them alive for a few more years but trees dont heal. It has sealed over the crack of the outside but the area where the crack is will always have that damage and will decay overtime. With the old wounds I already see here it will have significant hollowing in the future and likely rot around the bolts that are keeping it together. At the end of the day it is always up to your risk tolerance. Luckily it looks to be out of range of hitting anything so it is a good example of how it can be done
