I was walking along the beach minding my own business, keeping an eye out for any discarded female footwear that I could take home for my collection, when I stumbled upon this odd little appendage.
Before I could give it a proper examination I could hear police sirens making haste to my location, probably due to an incident that happened earlier.
So I had to get out of there ASAP, fortunately, intellectually I remembered to pick up the strange little branch.
I'm absolutely stumped as to what this could be, so I thought in order to get to the root of the problem I would go out on a limb and branch out to the people of Reddit.

This is part of a water lily rootsystem.
When you say on a beach, I’m assuming you mean by the sea or do you mean by fresh water? Either way I’d be surprised if it was from a water lily and it certainly won’t be if you found it neat salt water.
My first thought was that it was the stem of some kind of seaweed that has been pulled up, bashed around, lost the leaves and the stem has been washed up. I’m not sure of what seaweeds are around but I’d guess it was from some kind of deeper water vertical growing seaweed 🤷🏻♀️
