

Had this cabin since 1990 and these oak trees have always been a part of it. There was some deadwood a couple years ago that we had trimmed but assumed it was standard die off and the trimmer (well known in the area, everyone uses and recommends them) said they seemed healthy. Trees were trimmed after it was below freezing out. There were no signs during the summer and came up this weekend to find this. Does this mean what I think it does and the root system is toast?

Looks like hen of the woods. Not one of the worst fungus but yeah, you’ve got a fungus present in the tree. Doesn’t mean it’s toast, but maybe look around or ask the guy you used if he has a recommendation for someone who can do a tree risk assessment. What’s it near?
Hen of the woods typically isn’t fatal to oak trees. Congrats on your find. Hope. You can harvest on time next year!
